Wedding venues in Houston: a complete guide to choosing one

There are hundreds of wedding venues in the Houston area and almost all of them will show you the same thing: a pretty room at night with uplighting. This guide is about the things that decide whether the day works, most of which are invisible on a website.

The part you will remember. Everything below is about protecting it.

1. Settle the guest list before the venue

It is the number that sets everything else, and couples routinely tour rooms before they have it. A room sized for 250 will make 90 guests look thin; a room sized for 90 will make 150 feel like a queue.

If you are under about eighty, read the micro and small wedding guide — the rules are genuinely different.

2. Ask what the day actually costs

The headline rate is never the number. Get all of these in one message before you compare any two venues:

  • Room rate by day and time slot
  • Cleaning fee
  • Security fee, where applicable
  • Refundable deposit
  • Overtime, per hour
  • Catering markup or minimum
  • Corkage or bar minimum
  • What furniture is included

Ours, in full: the Mansion from $2,500, the Dome from $1,200, cleaning $350 or $200, refundable deposit $500 or $350, security $300 where alcohol is served or the event runs into the evening, additional hours $350 or $200. No catering markup, no bar minimum, no corkage. Every figure is on the pricing page, and the package cost guide works through what an all-inclusive booking really includes.

3. Decide who cooks

This is the largest single line in most wedding budgets and the one venues most often control. A 20% markup on $8,000 of catering is $1,600 — more than the difference between most venues on your shortlist.

It is also cultural. For a Nigerian, Indian, Caribbean, Mexican, halal or kosher wedding, the caterer is not interchangeable. See venues that let you bring your own caterer.

4. Ask how many weddings run that day

A venue running two weddings shares its parking, its staff and its corridors, and gives you a hard stop because the room must be turned. One wedding a day is a different product.

At The Hendrix only one event runs at a time, whichever room you take.

5. Look at the getting-ready rooms

Eight hours of the day happen in them, and they are where most of the candid photographs come from. Ask to see both, and check they are on the same floor as the ceremony — a bridal party moving between floors in gowns is a logistics problem nobody plans for.

Both suites are included with every Mansion booking here and sit on the same floor as the ballroom.

The bride’s suite has a full mirrored vanity run with seating for the whole party; the groom’s room has its own lounge. Both are on the ground floor with the ballroom.

6. Check the drinks rules

Bar spend can rival the room. Texas requires a TABC-certified server, but whether you may buy the stock yourself varies enormously. BYOB is permitted here — the full explanation is in the BYOB guide.

7. Visit at the wrong time of day

Every venue looks good at 7pm with uplighting on. Ask to stand in it at 2pm on a weekday with nothing in it. That is the room you are actually renting; the rest is decoration you are paying for separately.

Wedding venue questions

How much is a wedding venue in Houston?

At The Hendrix in Stafford the Mansion starts at $2,500 and seats 300, and the Dome starts at $1,200 for 80 guests or fewer. Added to that are a cleaning fee of $350 or $200, a refundable deposit of $500 or $350, and a $300 security fee where alcohol is served or the event runs into the evening.

What should I ask a wedding venue before booking?

Get the room rate by day and slot, the cleaning fee, the security fee, the deposit, the overtime rate, any catering markup or minimum, any corkage or bar minimum, and what furniture is included – all in one message, before you compare any two venues.

How many guests can The Hendrix hold for a wedding?

The Mansion seats 300 guests and holds 350 standing across about 10,000 sq ft. The Dome upstairs is best for 80 guests or fewer. The two rooms are never booked at the same time.

Do you host more than one wedding a day?

No. Only one event runs at The Hendrix at a time, so there is no shared parking, no second wedding through the wall and no hard stop because the room has to be turned.

Are the getting-ready suites included?

Yes, both are included with every Mansion booking and are on the same floor as the ballroom, so nobody moves between floors in a gown.

Can we bring our own caterer and alcohol?

Yes to both. There is no approved caterer list and no markup on the food bill, and BYOB is permitted with a TABC-certified bartender whose certificate reaches us five days before.

When is the best time to view a wedding venue?

Ask to stand in it at about 2pm on a weekday with nothing in it. Every venue looks good at 7pm with uplighting. The empty daytime room is what you are actually renting.
